Description: THE LIFE AND TIMES of Henry Tate is the subject of Norwood Society local history group’s next meeting on Thursday (March 18th).

Brian Bloice of Streatham Society will be giving the talk on the philanthropist at the Phoenix Centre, Westow Street, Crystal Palace – which stands to the left of Sainsbury’s – at 8pm.

Tate, who presented four free public libraries to the parish of Lambeth, is best known for building the Tate Gallery – on which he spent £80,000. The land was provided free by the government of the day.The Tate Gallery – now Tate Britain – opened in July 1887. Tate died at Streatham in December 1889.

Non-members welcome. Admission free. Anyone with anything of local historic interest they wish to know more about is welcome to bring it along (size permitting!).
